Rallying call for supporters of heritage

Monday, May 18, 2015

The Federation of Australian Historical Societies (FAHS) has facilitated the establishment of 'Parliamentary Friends of History and Heritage' amongst Australian Parliamentarians. Sponsored by the Hon. Greg Hunt, Minister responsible for Heritage, the inaugural convenors are Eric Hutchinson (LCL, Tasmania) and Laurie Ferguson (Labor, NSW). The group aims to make all Parliamentarians aware of the issues facing history and heritage in Australia, and FAHS encourages every interested person to approach their local (Federal) member to join this group. Minister the Hon. Greg Hunt has also taken steps to establish a national lottery, along the lines of the UK National Lottery which funds heritage and the arts. FAHS encourages heritage supporters to urge their Federal MP's and Senators to support this initiative as well.

Not so good is confirmation that the Commonwealth of Australia has now withdrawn from funding community history and heritage places, except for sites on the National Heritage List.

Thanks to FAHS President, Prof. Don Garden, and other FAHS members who have worked so hard to achieve these new initiatives, and to minimise setbacks for history and heritage in Australia.
